The Butter Churn

Ellingham, Northumberland

A two bedroom cottage for four in the grounds of Ellingham Hall with a fully enclosed lawn, a stone terrace and a tree house opposite, two dogs welcome.

Two dogs and a tree house, which between them cover the week. The Butter Churn stands in the grounds of Ellingham Hall, dog friendly, four across two bedrooms, its lawn fully enclosed by a stone wall on one side and fencing on the other two. The tree house and play area sit directly opposite, so a child can be up there while somebody watches from a chair.

Wooden floors run through the whole cottage, which is the right surface for two dogs coming back off a beach. The lounge and diner is one room, two sofas and a wood burner, French doors at the dining end onto the terrace, an archway through to the kitchen. A utility by the front door holds a butler sink, the washer and a WC, and is where everything muddy stops.

It is a cottage for four with children in mind and does not pretend otherwise: a stair gate fitted upstairs, a cupboard of games, a play area over the fence. Two bedrooms, a king and a twin, both looking at the lawn, and a bath long enough to be worth having. Two dogs come, and the enclosure is real on all three sides.

Chillingham is a short drive inland and holds the only herd of wild cattle left in Britain, white, horned and unhandled for seven hundred years, watched from a distance with a warden. Above them Ros Castle is a hillfort with a view taking in the whole coast, and Hepburn Woods climb the crag below it on forest tracks. Dogs are fine in the woods and on the hill, though not in the cattle park. The beaches are 5 miles the other way.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Butter Churn dog friendly?

Yes, The Butter Churn welcomes up to two dogs. The lawn is fully enclosed on all three sides — stone wall on one side, fencing on the other two — and the cottage has wooden floors throughout, which makes life considerably easier after a muddy or sandy outing.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Butter Churn year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's best to check directly with the property when booking to confirm availability for your dates. What is clear is that dogs are a genuine part of the setup here, not an afterthought.

  • What should I know before visiting The Butter Churn with my dog?

The cottage takes a maximum of two dogs, and there's a utility room by the front door with a butler sink — essentially a dedicated space for stopping everything muddy before it reaches the rest of the house. The beaches are around 5 miles away, and if you're heading inland to Chillingham to see the wild cattle, note that dogs aren't permitted inside the cattle park, though they're welcome in nearby Hepburn Woods and up on Ros Castle hillfort.
