A few fields west of here the ground stops being England. The Granary sleeps six at Kinsham, a red brick farmhouse set deep in worked farmland, dog friendly, with three bedrooms, its own enclosed garden and a garden room that does nothing but look at it. Two dogs come with it. Border country is quieter than either of the countries it separates, which is most of the argument for being in it.
The porch takes the boots and the coats before any of it gets as far as the hall, which in a house used by six people and two dogs matters more than it reads. The lounge sits off the main hall, and the garden room is the other option when somebody wants out of the conversation for an hour. Three bedrooms and two bathrooms for six, and outside, the enclosure runs round every side of it.
Mid-morning and the house has emptied itself onto the farm. The boots went on in the porch, the gate at the end of the lawn was the only one anybody had to open, and two dogs are somewhere out ahead in a field of stubble having a far better time than they would on a lead. Wapley Hill, 2 miles north, carries an Iron Age fort with four rings of bank and ditch still legible under the trees, and a well inside the top that has never been known to fail. Kinsham Court stands below it, where Byron spent a summer in 1812 with Lady Oxford and got a good deal of writing done. Two dogs get forest track, ramparts, and a lane back that nothing uses.
