The Hide

Rothbury, Northumberland

A two bedroom cottage for two in the middle of Rothbury, built upside down with a summer house and an enclosed west facing patio garden, three dogs welcome.

Three dogs come up the stone stairs from the garden and in through the summer house, which is how anything on four legs gets in here. Two people and three dogs makes a dog friendly stay where the animals outnumber the guests. The Hide sits in the middle of Rothbury, built upside down with bedrooms below and living above, and the enclosed west facing patio garden is at the top of it with a chiminea standing in the corner.

The staircase from the front door is wooden and the bedrooms come first, a double and a single with a bathroom between. A glazed door opens into the lounge, kitchen and diner all in one, a wood burner and a breakfast bar with stools. Two more steps up is the summer house, glass on three sides, a table in it and a second bar looking out at the garden and the dogs on it.

Two adults and up to three dogs, an unusual allowance in a cottage this size and most of the reason to look at it. The living space is up a staircase, so it suits people on their feet all day anyway. Everything in Rothbury is reachable on foot, and the garden means the dogs stay out in it while anybody eats.

The Simonside Hills stand over the town to the south, a sandstone ridge of dark crags with a path along the top and Coquetdale below. Lordenshaws sits under it, a hillfort with rocks around it carved in cup and ring marks four thousand years ago, nobody certain why. It is half a mile from the last house in Rothbury, and dogs have all of it on open access ground.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Hide dog friendly?

Yes, and generously so — The Hide welcomes up to three dogs, which is an unusual allowance for a cottage of this size. Dogs enter through the summer house via the garden stairs, and the enclosed west-facing patio garden gives them their own outdoor space to enjoy.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Hide year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and the setup — a chiminea in the garden and a wood burner inside — suggests it's well suited to visits in cooler months too. If you want to confirm availability for specific dates, it's worth checking directly with the host.

  • What should I know before visiting The Hide with my dog?

The cottage is built upside down, with the living space reached via a wooden staircase, so it's best suited to dogs that are comfortable on stairs. The enclosed garden is a real bonus for keeping dogs secure, and the surrounding area is excellent for walks — Lordenshaws hillfort and the Simonside Hills are both accessible on foot from Rothbury, with open access ground where dogs can roam freely.
