Look up as you walk into The Medieval Barn and the fully restored oak ceiling takes over, its beams criss crossing the whole length of the building. This charming period barn near Clyro sleeps ten and welcomes two dogs, a dog friendly family holiday home that is stylish, comfortable and brimming with character.

You come in from the walled Medieval garden to a well equipped kitchen with a large range cooker and a cleverly hidden Smart TV, so somebody can relax and watch while somebody else cooks. The main hall has an incredible vaulted ceiling and a dining table that easily seats every guest. At its far end is a large, relaxing sitting area with a log burning stove, three large settees and armchairs that seat ten with ease, and the dogs, back from a walk, will be asleep in front of the stove long before the logs run low.

There are five bedrooms, among them a ground floor double that has an en suite shower room, and from the main hall doors open onto the private walled garden, large and pretty, with views of the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons National Park. A barbecue, a firepit and outdoor seating make the evenings, with two dogs nosing round the old walls while supper cooks.

The River Wye runs at the bottom of the fields nearby, with canoe hire at Glasbury, and walking trails and cycle routes start from the doorstep. Bikes can be hired for the ride into Hay-on-Wye. The Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons lie within easy reach, with something for every level of adventurer, two dogs included, and the cathedral town of Brecon is 12 miles away.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Medieval Barn dog friendly?

Yes, The Medieval Barn welcomes up to two dogs. With a 17m hall, three sofas, a scatter of armchairs, and a private walled garden, there's plenty of space for them to make themselves at home — the listing notes a dog will be on one of those sofas before the first basket of logs is half gone.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Medieval Barn year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions, so dogs appear to be welcome whenever you book. The barn's log burner makes it a particularly good choice in the colder months, and the walled garden and fire pit come into their own in summer.

  • What should I know before visiting The Medieval Barn with my dog?

The barn accepts two dogs, and the private walled garden is a real bonus — the walls are high enough that dogs can be left to roam freely without being watched. Nearby Hay-on-Wye is also a good-natured destination for dogs, with many of its shops welcoming them through the door.
