The Old Bakehouse - Sway

Sway, Hampshire

A four bedroom conversion for eight in the middle of Sway, with an enclosed garden holding a hot tub, a separate enclosed lawn and four dogs welcome.

The village bakehouse is now a house for eight and takes four dogs, a better second career than most old working buildings manage. The Old Bakehouse stands at the centre of the village, dog friendly, four bedrooms over three bathrooms, an enclosure holding a hot tub and a separate fenced lawn past that. Forest lies a few minutes one way and the Solent a few minutes the other.

Two enclosed spaces instead of one is the part that counts at this size. The garden takes the tub, the furniture and the barbecue; the lawn beyond it is fenced and is where four dogs go when eight people would like the evening to themselves. One bedroom and one bathroom are at street level, and a wood burner covers the half of the year that wants covering.

Four dogs is the number that changes the guest list. It is enough for two households to arrive without one of them boarding an animal first, or for one household that has simply accumulated them. Eight people and four dogs in a village with a shop, a pub and a station is a low effort sort of week, and the tub handles whatever the day did to everybody's legs.

South of the village Hincheslea Moor opens out into heather and gravel with the ground dropping away and long views over the tops of the trees, and it is the nearest properly open heath to this door. Setley Pond sits the other side of the road, small and reedy with a track round the edge of it. Neither is far, both are unfenced, and four dogs get more from a morning up there than from anywhere with a car park and a sign.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Old Bakehouse - Sway dog friendly?

Yes, The Old Bakehouse welcomes up to four dogs, which makes it one of the more generous allowances you'll find for a self-catering property. That number is enough for two dog-owning households to arrive together without anyone having to make boarding arrangements beforehand.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Old Bakehouse - Sway year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and the property is set up well for year-round visits. A wood burner takes care of the colder months, and the enclosed spaces work just as well in winter as they do in summer.

  • What should I know before visiting The Old Bakehouse - Sway with my dog?

The property has two separate enclosed outdoor spaces — a garden with a hot tub and barbecue, and a fenced lawn beyond it where dogs can be left to roam freely. Just outside the village, Hincheslea Moor offers open heathland walks and Setley Pond has a track around its edge, though both are unfenced so it's worth keeping that in mind if your dogs aren't reliable off lead.
