The Old Police House was the village bobby's, and the refurbishment has had some fun with that. It stands in Belford, dog friendly, three bedrooms sleeping six with one medium dog, and stone steps climb from the back patio to a large enclosed lawn. Somebody has laid a full-size petanque pitch out on it, which will settle several arguments.
Downstairs, a snug holds two sofas and a television, then the kitchen and diner with windows on two sides, a long table and a wood burner. A boot room off the utility takes bikes, kit, coat hooks and boot racks, and a ground floor shower room deals with the dog and whoever walked it before the stairs. Three bedrooms and the family bathroom are above.
The petanque has been going an hour and the light is starting to fail. Somebody has been keeping score badly and is being challenged. The dog lies at the top of the stone steps, watching the pitch and the back door at once, which is the best position available. Somebody goes down to the outside tap and comes back with the boots done. Nobody has thought about dinner.
Ross Back Sands is the reason to take this one, and it is signposted from nowhere. You park at Ross, walk a mile of field track and a crossing of the dunes, and come out on 3 miles of beach with Holy Island at one end, Bamburgh castle at the other, and on most days nobody in between. It is among the emptiest beaches in England precisely because you cannot drive to it, and a dog has the whole length in every month.
