A pyghtle is a small enclosed field, a promising thing for a house to be called when the people arriving have a dog in the car. The Pyghtle sleeps four at Sway and is dog friendly, a big enclosed space behind it, outdoor seating, a rack for bicycles and one dog welcome. One bedroom and the bathroom sit at ground level. The forest starts a short way out of the village.

The garden is the argument and the name admits it. This is a proper enclosed space and not a yard, seating out in the middle and a set spot for the grill, plus somewhere to lock bicycles that is no afterthought in this part of Hampshire. A king and a twin make up the four. A single dog gets the run of the whole enclosure and no reason to go looking for a way out of it.

Sway sits southwest of the forest, far enough out to be a village with a life of its own and near enough that open ground is a walk not a drive. Four people, one dog and a pair of bicycles is the shape of it. You go out through the inclosures in the morning, come back muddy, and the animal spends the afternoon patrolling a garden it has already annexed.

Take the road north and Wilverley Inclosure arrives at 1.8 miles, a plantation with a level gravel ride running right round it and open heath on the far side, which is the gentlest introduction to this forest there is. Past it the ground opens out into Longslade Bottom and the heather. A dog can be given several miles of that without meeting a stile or crossing a road anywhere in the loop.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Pyghtle dog friendly?

Yes — The Pyghtle welcomes one dog and has been set up with that in mind. The big draw is the enclosed garden, a proper full-sized space rather than a token yard, where your dog can roam freely without any risk of wandering off.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Pyghtle year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the property directly to confirm availability for your dates. What we can say is that the New Forest on the doorstep makes it a compelling destination whatever time of year you're planning to visit.

  • What should I know before visiting The Pyghtle with my dog?

The property welcomes one dog, so it's not the right fit if you're travelling with more than that. The enclosed garden gives your dog plenty of space to settle in, and Wilverley Inclosure — with a level gravel ride looping around it and open heath beyond — is just 1.8 miles away, offering miles of dog-friendly walking without a stile or road crossing in sight.
