The Rising Sun Cottage

Broadwell, Gloucestershire

A three bedroom cottage for six at Broadwell in the Forest of Dean, with private enclosed gardens, a ground floor bedroom and bathroom, and two dogs welcome.

There is a hammock in the garden, which tells you what it is for. They are private and enclosed and run round the cottage, and the intended use is lying in them while somebody else takes the dogs out. The Rising Sun Cottage sleeps six at Broadwell in the Forest of Dean, dog friendly, and two dogs are on the booking. A garden with a hammock in it is a garden nobody has to supervise.

A bedroom and a bathroom are both at ground level, and the cottage is set up for anybody with limited movement, which quietly takes in an old dog as well. Two bathrooms for six means the morning works. The open fire is why the evening ends in one room, and the fire pit outside is where it started.

This suits six people who want the forest at the door and not at the end of a drive. The trees begin a few minutes from the village and carry on for miles in every direction, which is the whole reason to stay on this side of the Dean. Two dogs can be walked into woodland from the gate on any day of the week without repeating a route.

Cannop Ponds, a mile and a half off, are two lakes dug to drive an ironworks and now sitting quietly under conifers with a path all the way round. The Speech House stands further in, built for Charles the Second as the forest court and still the place where the verderers sit four times a year to rule on the rights of the people who live here. Two dogs get the ponds, flat and shaded and short enough for an evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Rising Sun Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, The Rising Sun Cottage welcomes dogs — up to two are included on the booking. The garden is private and enclosed, so your dogs can be out without needing supervision, and woodland walks begin just minutes from the village gate.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Rising Sun Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and the Forest of Dean setting makes it a year-round destination — with miles of woodland in every direction and Cannop Ponds a mile and a half away for a flat, shaded walk on any day of the week.

  • What should I know before visiting The Rising Sun Cottage with my dog?

The cottage takes a maximum of two dogs, so it's worth confirming this when booking if you're bringing more. It's also worth knowing that there's a ground floor bedroom and bathroom, which works well for older or less mobile dogs alongside any guests with limited movement. Woodland access is practically from the front gate, so you won't need to drive to find a decent walk.
