Book now

The River Cottage Retreat stands beside the River Wye within its own grounds, and the sound of the flowing water greets you as you come down the driveway. Two dogs are welcome at this charming dog friendly cottage for seven, with private fishing, paddleboarding and the Wye Valley walking path straight from the front door.

The heart of the cottage is the ground floor's open plan living space, with natural light spilling through the large windows. There is a well equipped kitchen for whipping up a feast, a dining area seating eight, and a lounge with large comfortable sofas and armchairs, a TV and a drop down projector screen for a film night, with the dogs curled up nearby after the day's walk. A beautiful bathroom, its free standing bath joined by a walk-in waterfall shower, is on this floor too.

Upstairs, three generously sized bedrooms all have countryside views, and doors from the landing open onto a covered terrace with comfortable seating and views to the hills. Outside, the private walled garden has a wooden framed conservatory with fairy lights for dinners outdoors, a covered bar area with a wood burner and a gas barbecue, and large areas of lawn for games while the dogs lie in the grass. In the adjoining field there is a fire pit with log bench seating.

Glasbury, with its good local pub, is under 1 mile away across the countryside, and Hay-on-Wye, 4 miles off, is famous for its book festival and second hand bookshops. The Begwyns offer 580 acres of National Trust hills and rolling landscape, and the owners suggest bringing towels for the dogs as well as for wild swimming.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The River Cottage Retreat dog friendly?

Yes, The River Cottage Retreat welcomes up to two dogs. The walled garden means your dogs can be let out last thing at night without worry, and there's a ground floor bathroom with a freestanding bath and walk-in shower that makes rinsing a muddy dog straightforward after a walk.

  • Are dogs allowed at The River Cottage Retreat year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and nothing in the property description suggests otherwise. It's always worth confirming directly with the owner when you book, especially if you're planning a longer stay.

  • What should I know before visiting The River Cottage Retreat with my dog?

The cottage sleeps seven and accepts a maximum of two dogs. The fully walled garden is a real practical asset — dogs can roam freely without the concern of open water nearby, which is worth noting given the River Wye runs along the bottom of the drive. The flat river path from the gate is ideal for an easy morning walk, and the ground floor wet room means dogs can be cleaned up without being carried upstairs.
