The Seabird sits right next to Beadnell Bay, and a gate from its garden gives direct access to the beach a few metres away. It is a dog friendly coastal house for five people and one dog. Two of its bedrooms have sea views, and an observatory room at the very top looks out over the bay.
You come in through the stylish kitchen, with its breakfast bar for an early coffee. Beyond it, the inviting lounge and diner keeps some of the house's most interesting original features: a stone fireplace, wood flooring and wall panelling that came from the first class lounge of Cunard's flagship Berengaria in 1938. It is a grand thing for a dog to doze in front of once the fire is lit.
The king size bedroom has a lovely panoramic view of the bay, the twin has sea views as well, and there is a cosy single. Another staircase rises to the observatory room, furnished with easy chairs and binoculars for the view across the bay to Dunstanburgh Castle, a fine retreat with a drink and a book. Outside, the sheltered, low walled garden has a picnic style table and seating, and it is where the dog dries off after a morning on the sand.
That bay has a sandy beach, dunes for picnics, historic stone lime kilns and a pretty harbour, and the dog will want all of it. The coastal paths lead to Seahouses, 2 miles away, for a boat trip to the Farne Islands, and on to Bamburgh, 5 miles, for its beautiful castle and beach. Newton by the Sea and Low Newton make a good walk for a drink at the beachside pub.
