Beadnell sits on the one bend of this coast where the land turns far enough for its harbour to face west, which is why the bay in front is the water everybody sails on. The Seabird stands on the edge of it, dog friendly for five, one dog allowed, and a gate at the bottom of the low walled garden opens onto sand instead of a road.
The front door opens into the kitchen and its breakfast bar. Beyond it the lounge carries a stone fireplace and wall panelling lifted from the Cunard liner Berengaria when she was broken up in 1938, which is an unusual thing for a dog to sleep in front of. A king upstairs looks the length of the bay, a twin and a single alongside, and a narrow staircase climbs again to an observatory room with two chairs and binoculars.
One dog, and that garden gate is the reason to take it. Anybody who has carried a soaked animal past parked cars to reach a beach knows what a latch in a low wall is worth at seven in the morning. Five sleep across three bedrooms, so it works for a family or two couples with a child, provided everybody agrees in advance who does the early walk.
The coast path passes the end of the garden both ways. South it crosses the burn and the dune line towards Newton; north it goes on past the point to the next village. Bamburgh and its castle stand further up the same sand. Walk either way as far as the dog wants and no road comes into it, and the tide settles how much beach there is.
