The Walled Garden

Walworth, County Durham

A five bedroom house for twelve near Darlington with four bedrooms on the ground floor, a pool table in the loft and a south facing walled garden, four dogs welcome.

The Walled Garden takes four dogs, which is more than almost anything of its size, and the garden it is named for explains that: south facing, walled the whole way round, and open enough for a dog to run flat out with nobody posted at a gate. The house behind it sleeps twelve across five bedrooms at Walworth outside Darlington, dog friendly on a scale large houses rarely manage.

Four of those bedrooms are on the ground floor, along with a wet room, a family bathroom and underfloor heating throughout, which makes it an unusually easy house for guests with limited mobility and for an old dog that has slowed down. The living space runs as a single room, bi-fold doors the height of the wall, so on a still evening house and garden turn into the same room and the dogs work both.

Somebody is losing at pool up in the loft. Four dogs have found the coolest patch of the ground floor and lie there in a heap. The charcoal is going on the decking, the bi-folds are open, and every so often one of them gets up, does a lap of the walled garden at speed for reasons nobody can establish, and returns to exactly the same spot.

Walworth is a scatter of houses around a castle with open country in every direction. Piercebridge and its Roman bridge are a couple of miles off, Barnard Castle and the Bowes Museum a longer run west, Darlington near for a station and shops. The Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors both sit inside an hour, which gives four dogs a very wide choice of day.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Walled Garden dog friendly?

Yes, and generously so — The Walled Garden welcomes up to four dogs, which is unusually accommodating for a property of its size. The south-facing walled garden is enclosed all the way round, giving dogs the freedom to run at full pace without anyone needing to watch a gate.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Walled Garden year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's best to check directly with the property when booking. What is clear is that the setup — underfloor heating throughout, ground floor bedrooms, and a fully enclosed garden — works well whatever the season.

  • What should I know before visiting The Walled Garden with my dog?

The house takes a maximum of four dogs, so it's worth confirming your numbers when you book. Four of the five bedrooms are on the ground floor with a wet room nearby, which is handy for muddy paws after a day out — and with open country in every direction around Walworth, muddy paws are a fair bet.
