1 / 24Winter's Tale
Shottery, Warwickshire
A two bedroom thatched cottage for four at Shottery near Stratford-upon-Avon, with an enclosed private garden, a sun room and two dogs welcome.
There is a sitting room between the two bedrooms. Not downstairs, not off a landing, but in the middle of the upper floor with a bedroom either side of it, which is an arrangement you get in old buildings and almost never in new ones. Winter's Tale is a thatched dog friendly cottage for four at Shottery, two bedrooms over one bathroom, with an enclosed private garden. The room a dog actually lies in is whichever one people are sitting in, and this cottage has given it two to choose from.
Downstairs, a glass roofed sun room runs off the lounge and opens into the garden, a lit space between indoors and out for a wet dog to stop in. The building is old and shows it: beams throughout, some of them low, and a door frame or two the owners flag in writing. Walk round it slowly the first time and the rest of the week is fine.
Nine in the evening and the cottage has three rooms doing nothing much. The sun room has the last of the light under its glass, somebody has taken a book up to the one between the bedrooms, and two dogs have divided themselves across both, which is what a house this small with this many places to sit produces.
Down the field path, Anne Hathaway's Cottage stands in the hamlet where she was born, thatched like this one and older, with cottage garden and orchard around it and dogs allowed on a lead through the grounds. The path across the fields into Stratford is the one people have walked for four hundred years and is barely a mile. Two dogs get a hamlet that the town never quite reached.

Book with holidaycottages.co.ukFrequently Asked Questions
Is Winter's Tale dog friendly?
Yes, Winter's Tale welcomes up to two dogs. The cottage has an enclosed private garden for them to use safely, and a glass-roofed sun room that sits handily between indoors and the garden — useful for a wet dog who needs somewhere to pause before coming inside.
Are dogs allowed at Winter's Tale year round?
The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions, so it's worth contacting the owners directly to confirm availability for your dates. What the cottage offers doesn't change with the season — the enclosed garden, the sun room, and the two sitting rooms are there whatever time of year you visit.
What should I know before visiting Winter's Tale with my dog?
The cottage is an old building with beams throughout and at least one low door frame, so take a slow walk round when you arrive to get your bearings — the owners flag the low points in writing. Once you're settled, the enclosed garden is a safe space for dogs, and Anne Hathaway's Cottage is just down the field path, where dogs are welcome on a lead through the grounds.
