Burrough Hill Iron Age Hillfort Circular

Leicestershire

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A Leicestershire hills walk to an impressive Iron Age hillfort with wide views across the Melton Country.

Burrough Hill is crowned by one of the finest Iron Age hillforts in the East Midlands, its ramparts still clearly defined on a prominent ridge in east Leicestershire. This 10 km circular via Somerby climbs steadily from the car park through farmland and quiet lanes to the fort, where panoramic views open across rolling countryside towards Rutland and the distant market towns. The 230 m of ascent is spread across the full circuit, with the main climb concentrated on the approach to the fort itself. The grassy ramparts and open hilltop give a genuine sense of elevation and history, and the return through Somerby adds a pleasant village section to break up the field walking.

This is a dog friendly walk that combines proper exercise with a real sense of place. The open hilltop carries wind and scent from all directions, and the grassy terrain inside the fort gives dogs space to explore the earthworks. However, livestock grazing is common across the surrounding farmland and on the hill itself, so leads are required throughout and awareness of sheep is essential. The field-edge paths and country lanes on the return offer quieter, more sheltered walking with hedgerow scent and seasonal interest. The 230 m of climbing provides a genuine workout for both dog and owner. Best suited to dogs comfortable with sustained uphill walking on open, exposed ground.
