Swithland Wood and Cropston Reservoir Loop

Leicestershire

Dog Friendly Rating: 8/10 A Charnwood Forest classic combining ancient woodland with reservoir views, with bluebells in spring.

Swithland Wood is one of Leicestershire's most important ancient woodlands, a dense canopy of oak, ash and field maple with a spectacular bluebell display in spring. This 5.6km circuit combines the woodland with a loop around Cropston Reservoir, creating a walk that shifts between shaded forest paths and open waterside views. The wood has been continuously wooded for centuries, and the ancient trees create a layered canopy with rich understorey of holly, hazel and bramble. The reservoir adds a different dimension, with birdlife on the water and long views across the surface to the Charnwood hills. With just 75 metres of climbing, the terrain is gentle throughout.

This is a varied dog friendly walk with moderate off-lead potential in the woodland where the enclosed environment provides natural boundaries. The ancient woodland floor is exceptionally rich in scent from deep leaf litter, fungi and damp earth, and the reservoir provides visual interest and water access at certain points. Livestock risk is low within the woodland and around the reservoir. The paths can be muddy after rain, particularly through the lower woodland sections. Parking is available at the Swithland Wood car park. The Griffin Inn at Swithland village welcomes dogs. The bluebells in April and May are worth planning around, but the wood rewards in every season with its layered, atmospheric character.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, this is a well-suited walk for dogs and earns a solid 8/10 on our dog-friendly rating. Livestock risk is low throughout, both in the woodland and around the reservoir, and there are points along the route where dogs can access the water. After the walk, The Griffin Inn in Swithland village welcomes dogs too.

There's moderate off-lead potential in the woodland sections, where the enclosed nature of the trees and understorey provides natural boundaries. It's worth keeping this in mind rather than treating the whole 5.6km circuit as off-lead territory, particularly around the more open reservoir loop where conditions may differ.

The paths through the lower woodland sections can get muddy after rain, so boots and a dog towel for the car are a good idea. There are no facilities on the route itself, but free parking is available at Swithland Wood car park. The ancient woodland floor is rich in leaf litter, fungi and scent , great sensory territory for dogs, but worth keeping an eye on what yours might be investigating.
