Beacon Hill Country Park Summit Circuit

Leicestershire

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A short circuit to one of Leicestershire's highest points with rocky outcrops and views towards the Derbyshire hills.

Beacon Hill is the second-highest point in Leicestershire and the centrepiece of a country park that combines mixed woodland, open heathland and exposed rocky outcrops into a compact 5 km circuit. The climb from the car park is steady through broadleaf and conifer woodland before the trees thin and the path breaks onto heather-covered slopes with weathered granite boulders scattered across the summit plateau. On clear days the views from the trig point stretch across the county and well beyond. The 148 m of ascent is concentrated but never brutal, and the descent loops through quieter woodland on the far side of the hill.

This is an energising dog friendly walk that packs genuine variety into a short distance. The woodland climb carries rich scent from leaf litter and bracken, while the open summit gives dogs wind, space and the kind of rocky terrain that rewards sure-footed exploration. Off-lead potential is moderate, with the heathland and woodland offering good sections away from livestock, though awareness of ground-nesting birds is important on the heath during breeding season. The rocky outcrops can be rough on pads, so dogs with sensitive feet should be monitored. A walk that delivers a real sense of achievement for its modest length, and well suited to dogs who enjoy short, physical outings with texture and altitude.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Beacon Hill Country Park Summit Circuit dog friendly?

Beacon Hill Country Park Summit Circuit is a solid choice for dogs, earning a rating of 8 out of 10. The 5 km circuit packs in a great mix of woodland, open heathland and rocky outcrops, giving dogs plenty of variety in scent, terrain and space. It suits dogs who enjoy a short but physical outing with a bit of altitude thrown in.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Beacon Hill Country Park Summit Circuit?

Off-lead potential is moderate here , the heathland and woodland sections offer good stretches away from livestock, making them reasonable spots to let dogs roam. That said, it's worth being mindful of ground-nesting birds on the heath during breeding season, so keeping dogs closer during that period is advisable.

  • What should I know before visiting Beacon Hill Country Park Summit Circuit with my dog?

The rocky granite outcrops near the summit can be rough underfoot, so if your dog has sensitive pads it's worth keeping an eye on them during that section of the route.
