Butser Hill

Surrey

Dog Friendly Rating: 8/10 A rewarding climb to the highest point on the South Downs within Queen Elizabeth Country Park, with managed trails and good facilities.

Butser Hill is the highest point on the South Downs at 270 metres, and this 8 km circuit from the upper car park explores the open chalk downland that surrounds it. The route follows well-defined paths across exposed grassland where the wind is constant and the views stretch south to the Solent and north across the Hampshire Weald. The 312 m of climbing is spread across rolling terrain rather than one sustained pull, and the character is open, airy and expansive throughout. The chalk grassland supports rare wildflowers and butterflies in summer, and the ancient field systems visible as earthworks on the hilltop add historical texture. This is South Downs walking at its most elemental.

Dogs get a rewarding dog friendly walk here with genuine space and altitude feel. The open downland provides excellent ground for dogs who enjoy working in wind and covering distance across firm, dry terrain. The chalk paths drain well and hold up in all weather, making this a reliable year-round option. Off-lead potential is moderate, with good stretches across the open hilltop, though livestock graze parts of the downland and leads should be carried and used where sheep are present. The exposed summit can be harsh in poor weather, so this walk suits fair days best. There is no water access on the route, so carrying water is essential on warmer days. The sense of space and elevation makes this feel bigger than many longer walks at lower altitude.

Frequently Asked Questions

Butser Hill is a great choice for dogs, earning a solid 8/10 on our dog-friendly rating. The open chalk downland gives dogs real space to stretch out, and the well-drained paths hold up well in all conditions, making it a reliable option whatever the season. The visitor centre, café, toilets and shop at the Queen Elizabeth Country Park car park also make the logistics of a day out with your dog that bit easier.

There are good stretches across the open hilltop where dogs can enjoy some off-lead freedom, so it's far from a fully on-lead walk. That said, livestock graze parts of the downland, so you should carry a lead and put it on whenever sheep are present , this is non-negotiable on the South Downs.

A couple of things worth knowing before you head out: there's no water access on the 8 km route, so bring enough for both you and your dog, especially on warmer days. The exposed summit at 270 metres can be pretty harsh in poor weather, so this walk is best saved for fair days rather than stormy ones. Parking is at the Queen Elizabeth Country Park main car park (PO8 0QE), which costs £8–9 per day on an ANPR system, so no need for cash but do make sure you're registered before you set off.
