The most complete Roman fort walls in northern Europe, enclosing a huge green that makes an excellent dog walk in its own right, on Portsmouth Harbour.
Portchester has the most complete Roman fort walls anywhere in northern Europe, and standing inside them is the point. It began as a vast Saxon Shore fort and retains almost all its Roman defences, with a 12th century Norman keep added in one corner which you can climb 100 feet for views across the Solent and Portsmouth Harbour.
As you work through the displays, which cover Napoleonic prisoners of war and, more strikingly, around 2,000 African-Caribbean soldiers captured fighting on St Lucia and imprisoned here, your dog gets the interior, which is a very large open green with a church at one end and makes an excellent walk in its own right, with the harbour shoreline immediately outside the walls.
Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the site. Parking is charged, 200 metres from the entrance and not managed by English Heritage. There is a café, shop, toilets, exhibition, gardens and picnic seating. The keep stair is a long climb.
