Fen Drayton Lakes

Cambridgeshire

Dog Friendly Rating: 7/10 An RSPB Cambridgeshire lakeside walk with wetland restoration and good osprey sightings in season.

Fen Drayton Lakes is an RSPB reserve between Cambridge and St Ives, where former gravel workings have been transformed into a network of lakes, lagoons and waterways along the Great Ouse valley. The 6.4 km circular trail via Ferry Lagoon takes in the reserve's largest body of open water, passing through willow scrub, grassland and water edges alive with birdlife. It's flat, easy walking on gravel tracks and grass paths, and the sheer volume of water and wildlife gives it a character quite unlike typical fenland routes.

Water-loving dogs will be in their element on this dog friendly walk, with safe bank access for swimming at multiple points around the main lagoon and along the Great Ouse. The flat terrain suits dogs of all ages and fitness levels. Note that two small areas restrict dog access — Moore Lake hide and the seasonal Ferry Mere viewpoint — to protect nesting birds, so keep an eye out for signage. Off-lead potential is low given the sensitive birdlife, so reliable recall or a long lead is recommended throughout.
