Grafham Water

Grafham Water is one of England's largest reservoirs, covering 640 acres in the Cambridgeshire countryside with a signed 14 km perimeter path circling the full extent of the water. The western and northern shores pass through mixed deciduous woodland managed for wildlife — oak, ash and birch with dense understorey — while the eastern shore opens up with broad views across the reservoir where sailing boats add movement and colour. Two cafes provide natural stopping points on the circuit, and the changing character between woodland, open water and field edges gives this long walk genuine variety throughout.

This dog friendly walk is excellent for dogs who enjoy distance and water. The woodland sections provide rich scenting with dense undergrowth and seasonal interest, while the open reservoir edges offer fresh air and wide views. Off-lead potential is moderate along the quieter western paths, though leads are sensible on the busier southern shore near facilities. Livestock risk is low throughout. At 14 km, this is a proper half-day walk that suits fit dogs well — bring water and plan for breaks at the cafes along the route. The reservoir margins attract wading birds in autumn, so recall should be reliable near the water's edge.
