Filey Brigg and the Cleveland Way
North Yorkshire
Filey Brigg is a dog friendly rocky promontory that juts half a mile into the North Sea and marks the southern end of the Cleveland Way National Trail. The walk climbs out of Filey through Filey Brigg Country Park, follows the clifftop path onto the Brigg itself with views back across the bay, and returns along the grassy headland and promenade.
Dogs need to be on a lead along the clifftop and on the Brigg itself, where the drops are sudden and the rocks slippery at high tide. Inside the country park dogs can be off lead in the grassland sections away from the cliff edge, but expect sheep on the seaward fields in summer. The seasonal beach dog ban runs on Filey main beach from 1 May to 30 September, but the Brigg itself stays dog friendly year round. Paths are mostly level mown grass and surfaced promenade, with one steep-ish descent to the base of the Brigg. West Avenue car park has pay and display, toilets and a dog-friendly cafe nearby.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Filey Brigg and the Cleveland Way dog friendly?
Filey Brigg and the Cleveland Way earn a solid 7 out of 10 for dog friendliness. Dogs are welcome year round on the Brigg itself and through Filey Brigg Country Park, and there are dog-friendly cafes and pubs in Filey to round off the walk. Bear in mind that Filey's main beach operates a seasonal dog ban from 1 May to 30 September, so stick to the Brigg and clifftop path during summer months.
Can dogs be off lead at Filey Brigg and the Cleveland Way?
There are off-lead opportunities in the grassland sections of Filey Brigg Country Park, away from the cliff edge. However, dogs must be kept on a lead along the clifftop path and on the Brigg itself, where the drops are sudden and rocks can be slippery at high tide. It's also worth knowing that the seaward fields within the country park can have sheep grazing in summer, so lead up around livestock.
What should I know before visiting Filey Brigg and the Cleveland Way with my dog?
The route is mostly manageable — mown grass and surfaced promenade — but there is one steeper descent down to the base of the Brigg, so worth bearing in mind if your dog isn't steady on uneven ground. High tide makes the rocks on the Brigg slippery, so it's a good idea to check tide times before you go. Parking is available at West Avenue pay and display (YO14 9BE), with toilets and a dog-friendly cafe close by.
