Friston Forest and the Cuckmere Valley

East Sussex

Three completely different landscapes share this 10.5 km circuit from the Westdean car park: the enclosed chalk woodland of Friston Forest, the wide open floodplain of the Cuckmere river valley, and a return stretch of open downland above the forest edge. The descent through the forest to the valley floor is one of the more dramatic transitions in Sussex walking — from cool, yew-and-beech canopy to sudden flat openness with the Cuckmere running clear and cold alongside.

The Cuckmere floodplain is one of the finest off-lead stretches in East Sussex when livestock-free: wide, flat, and green with excellent river access at several shallow points. The village of Alfriston is a natural mid-route stop with multiple dog-friendly pubs. The forest itself has the enclosed, resinous-chalk smell of yew and ash rather than conifer plantation — specific and interesting rather than overwhelming. Meadow sections flood in winter and may be impassable after sustained heavy rain.
