Irchester Country Park

Northamptonshire

Irchester was once a working ironstone quarry; now it's 194 acres of mixed woodland growing over the old workings southeast of Wellingborough, and the quarry origins give it a texture that straightforward parkland rarely achieves. The 5 km circuit passes through oak, birch, and ash, takes in the Ironstone Railway Museum with its narrow-gauge engines, loops through meadows and the Wildlife Trust's Cally Banks reserve, and benefits from the undulating ground the quarrying left behind.

The earthy, slightly ferrous smell of old ironstone beneath the leaf litter is distinct and specific — dogs investigate it with real focus. Muntjac deer are present in the park, so close control on the more enclosed woodland paths is sensible. Dogs are welcome off-lead across most of the site. The Quarrymen's Rest café sits at the centre of the park and the Ironstone Railway Museum is free to visit alongside the walk — a useful bonus for families.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Irchester Country Park dog friendly?

Irchester Country Park is a great choice for a dog walk. The 194-acre woodland park offers a 5 km circuit through oak, birch, and ash, with undulating terrain that gives the walk real variety. There's a café on site at the Quarrymen's Rest, plus toilets and a free Ironstone Railway Museum , handy if you're combining the walk with a family day out.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Irchester Country Park?

Dogs are welcome off lead across most of the site, making it a relaxed and enjoyable outing for both you and your dog. That said, muntjac deer are present in the park, so it's worth keeping closer control on the more enclosed woodland paths where deer are more likely to be encountered.

  • What should I know before visiting Irchester Country Park with my dog?

Muntjac deer are present throughout the park, so be prepared to keep your dog on lead in the denser woodland sections if needed. The quarry origins of the site mean the ground has a distinctive earthy, slightly ferrous smell that dogs tend to find very interesting , expect plenty of nose-to-the-ground investigation. Parking is pay and display at Gipsy Lane, Little Irchester, NN29 7DL.
