Leighton Moss RSPB Circular Walk

Lancashire

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A varied nature reserve loop with limestone woodland, reedbed views and Morecambe Bay glimpses, but with dogs limited to specific paths and the causeway.

Leighton Moss is the RSPB's flagship Lancashire reserve and this dog friendly circular links the public Causeway that crosses the reedbeds with the limestone woodland paths of Silverdale and Eaves Wood. Expect a richly varied walk: otter-haunted reedbeds, booming bitterns in spring, ancient yew and ash woodland, open limestone pavement and glimpses of Morecambe Bay from the high points of the Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape.

Dogs are welcome on leads along the Causeway (a public right of way) and on the surrounding woodland rights of way, but they are not allowed on the reserve trails or hides, so this route works around those restrictions. The RSPB visitor centre allows dogs on leads in the cafe and shop, with water bowls provided. The walk is largely moderate with a few short rocky climbs on the Silverdale section. The main RSPB car park is the best starting point, with paid parking for non-members and full facilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Leighton Moss RSPB Circular Walk dog friendly?

Leighton Moss earns a 7/10 for dog friendliness — welcoming enough, but with some important restrictions to be aware of. Dogs are welcome on leads along the Causeway public right of way and the surrounding woodland paths, and they're also allowed on leads inside the RSPB visitor centre, including the café and shop, where water bowls are provided.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Leighton Moss RSPB Circular Walk?

Dogs need to be kept on leads throughout this walk, both on the Causeway across the reedbeds and on the woodland rights of way in Silverdale. This is a nature reserve with sensitive wildlife, so on-lead rules apply across the whole route.

  • What should I know before visiting Leighton Moss RSPB Circular Walk with my dog?

The key thing to know is that dogs are not permitted on the RSPB reserve trails or hides — this circular route is specifically designed to work around those restrictions, sticking to the public Causeway and surrounding woodland paths. The walk is mostly moderate going but includes a few short rocky climbs on the Silverdale section, so it's worth bearing that in mind if your dog isn't keen on rougher terrain. Parking is at the RSPB Leighton Moss car park (LA5 0SW), which is free for RSPB members and paid for non-members.
