Macclesfield Forest Dog Walk

Cheshire

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A good off-lead forest walk through conifer plantation above the Macclesfield valley with reservoir views and solid tracks.

Macclesfield Forest sits on the western slopes of the Peak District foothills, a dense plantation of spruce, larch and pine draped across rolling hills east of Macclesfield. The 7.2km circuit from Trentabank car park follows forest roads and narrower tracks through the trees, climbing to clearings with views across the Cheshire Plain before dropping back to the reservoirs at the forest's heart. At 293 metres of ascent, this feels noticeably more muscular than typical Cheshire walks, with the elevation and conifer canopy giving it an almost upland character. The forest is home to breeding goshawks, and the heronry at the reservoir is one of the county's wildlife highlights.

This is an excellent dog friendly walk with high off-lead potential throughout the forest. The tracks are wide enough for dogs to range freely, and the dense plantation provides shelter from wind and rain year-round. The ground can be muddy after rain, particularly on the lower paths near the reservoirs, but the higher forest roads drain well. Livestock risk is minimal within the forest boundary. The reservoir provides water access, and streams cross the route at several points. Trentabank car park has good facilities and the forest visitor area is well maintained. A strong choice when you want proper exercise and elevation without leaving Cheshire.
