Meall a’ Bhuachaille Summit Loop

Perthshire

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10An excellent first Corbett with superb summit views and good paths throughout; the steep upper section demands fitness but the reward is one of the finest viewpoints in the Cairngorms.

Meall a' Bhuachaille rises to 810 metres on the northern edge of the Cairngorms above Glenmore, and this 8.5km circuit from the Glenmore Forest visitor area climbs through pine forest before breaking onto open heather moorland for the final push to the summit. The lower slopes pass through atmospheric Scots pine with the characteristic scent of resin and the crunch of needles underfoot, while the upper mountain is bare and rocky with wide views across Abernethy Forest, Loch Morlich and the main Cairngorm plateau. With 605 metres of ascent, this is a proper hill day that rewards with a sense of genuine elevation gain, and the summit cairn sits above most of the surrounding landscape.

This is a demanding but rewarding dog friendly walk that requires a fit dog comfortable with sustained climbing and exposed terrain. Off-lead potential is moderate: the forest sections allow some freedom, but the open hillside above the treeline needs care as the ground falls away steeply in places. Livestock risk is low in the Glenmore area. Water is available from burns on the lower slopes, but carry a supply for the upper mountain. The summit is exposed and catches weather from every direction, so be prepared to turn back if conditions deteriorate. The descent can be hard on joints, particularly on the steeper rocky sections. Glenmore Lodge provides parking and the Pine Marten café welcomes dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Meall a' Bhuachaille Summit Loop dog friendly?

Yes, Meall a' Bhuachaille Summit Loop is dog friendly and earns a 7 out of 10 on our rating. It's best suited to fit, confident dogs that are comfortable with sustained climbing and exposed mountain terrain , this is a serious 8.5km hill walk with 605 metres of ascent, so it's not one for young puppies or dogs with joint issues. On the plus side, livestock risk in the Glenmore area is low, and the Pine Marten Bar at Glenmore Lodge welcomes dogs after your walk.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Meall a' Bhuachaille Summit Loop?

Off-lead potential is moderate on this route. The lower forest sections through the Scots pine offer reasonable freedom, but you'll want to keep your dog closer on the open hillside above the treeline, where the ground can fall away steeply in places. Livestock risk is described as low in the Glenmore area, which helps, but the exposed upper mountain calls for sensible management.

  • What should I know before visiting Meall a' Bhuachaille Summit Loop with my dog?

This is a demanding mountain walk, so your dog needs to be fit and used to rough, rocky terrain , the descent in particular can be hard on joints on the steeper sections. The summit at 810 metres is exposed and catches weather from all directions, so be ready to turn back if conditions change quickly. Burns on the lower slopes provide natural water, but carry a supply for the upper mountain where there's nothing available. Parking is at Glenmore Visitor Centre car park (PH22 1QU, pay and display), and the Pine Marten Bar at Glenmore Lodge is a welcome dog-friendly stop afterwards.
