Rothiemurchus Forest to the Iron Bridge

Rothiemurchus Forest is one of the largest surviving remnants of the ancient Caledonian pine forest, and this 7.6km circuit to the Iron Bridge follows well-maintained tracks through a landscape of towering Scots pine, juniper, birch and heather that has been continuous woodland since the last Ice Age. The route follows the Cairngorm Club footpath through the forest to the Iron Bridge over the Am Beanaidh river, a popular turning point where the water runs clear and cold over granite boulders. Red squirrels, crested tits and Scottish crossbills inhabit the canopy, and the forest floor is a carpet of blaeberry, moss and pine needles. With 195 metres of gentle climbing, the terrain is easy throughout.

This is one of the finest dog friendly walks in the Cairngorms for dogs that love woodland. Off-lead potential is high throughout the forest, with wide tracks and minimal hazards giving dogs genuine freedom to range and explore. The river at the Iron Bridge provides excellent swimming and paddling access in clean, cold Highland water. Livestock risk is negligible within the forest. The pine-scented air and soft forest floor create a sensory environment that dogs find deeply engaging in every season. Rothiemurchus Farm shop and café near the start welcomes dogs, and the estate is well set up for visitors with good parking. The forest connects to numerous other Cairngorms walks for those wanting to extend their day.
