Nantlle Ridge Circular Walk
Gwynedd
The Nantlle Ridge is one of the great mountain walks in Wales, a long undulating crest of rocky peaks running west from Rhyd Ddu over Y Garn, Mynydd Drws-y-Coed, Trum y Ddysgl, Mynydd Tal-y-Mignedd and Craig Cwm Silyn, with views to the sea and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). This dog friendly out and back follows the ridge for as long as you want before retracing your steps to Rhyd Ddu, avoiding the linear transport headache of the full traverse.
The terrain is genuine mountain ground with steep grass climbs, rocky scrambles (Mynydd Drws-y-Coed has some grade 1 sections that nervous dogs may struggle with) and exposed narrow ridges. Most of the route is access land where dogs can be off lead, but sheep graze the lower slopes and ground-nesting birds are protected on the upper hill, so dogs should be on the lead between 1 March and 31 July. There are no facilities anywhere on the ridge. Pay and display parking at Rhyd Ddu, dog friendly Cwellyn Arms in Rhyd Ddu.
