Llyn Dinas (Circular)
Snowdonia National Park
Llyn Dinas occupies the floor of the stunning Nant Gwynant valley in Snowdonia, flanked by steep hillsides rising toward the Snowdon massif. This 4.5 km circuit follows both shores of the lake, passing the National Trust farm at Llyndy Isaf and the legendary hillfort of Dinas Emrys — where, according to Welsh folklore, Vortigern witnessed the battle of the red and white dragons. The path has been improved in recent years, and the southern shore runs on a well-surfaced track forming part of the Lon Gwynant long-distance route. The valley atmosphere is peaceful and the mountain framing is spectacular.
This dog friendly walk offers lakeside calm with a powerful mountain backdrop. Llyn Dinas is shallow and accessible, and dogs can enter the water at several points along the shore. The valley air carries a cool, grassy sweetness in summer, undercut by the mineral edge of the lake itself. However, leads are required throughout — grazing cattle are managed on the estate from early summer, and care should be taken near the herd if calves are present. The easy terrain and manageable distance make this suitable for dogs of all sizes and ages, even though the lead requirement limits free running.

Frequently Asked Questions
Llyn Dinas is a solid choice for a dog walk, earning a 7/10 on our dog friendly rating. The lake is shallow and accessible, with several points along the shore where dogs can paddle, and the 4.5 km circuit is manageable for dogs of all sizes and ages. The main caveat is that leads are required throughout the route, which limits free running.
Unfortunately, dogs need to be kept on lead for the entire circuit. Grazing cattle are managed on the estate from early summer, and extra care is needed around the herd if calves are present. It's worth bearing in mind before you visit, particularly if your dog finds lead walking challenging.
The small roadside car park at the southeastern end of the lake can fill up quickly, so arriving early is a good idea , there is some additional roadside parking along the A498 if needed. Leads are essential throughout due to grazing cattle on the estate, and you should take extra care if calves are present. On a positive note, Caffi Gwynant, about 1 km north at Nant Gwynant, has dog-friendly outdoor seating if you fancy a stop before or after your walk.
