Pen y Fan from the Neuadd Reservoir
Powys
The Neuadd Horseshoe is the connoisseur's way up Pen y Fan (886m), South Wales' highest summit, avoiding the heaving Pont ar Daf path and tracing the rim of the deep glacial cwm above the Lower Neuadd Reservoir. The classic round takes in Corn Du, Pen y Fan, Cribyn and Fan y Big in a single big day, a dog friendly walk that earns its views from one of the most dramatic ridges in the country.
From the small reservoir car park the route climbs onto the southern ridge and stays on broad open mountain for most of the day, where dogs can be off lead. Sheep and the occasional wild pony graze the slopes, and the high ridge is exposed to weather. The descent path can be boggy. There are no facilities anywhere on the walk, so carry plenty of water for both you and your dog. Parking is at the small free car park at Lower Neuadd, fills quickly at weekends.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Pen y Fan from the Neuadd Reservoir dog friendly?
Yes, this route scores 8 out of 10 for dog friendliness on Wildpack Collective. The Neuadd Horseshoe is a great alternative to the busier Pont ar Daf approach, offering a quieter, more open mountain experience that suits dogs well. Just be aware that sheep and wild ponies graze the slopes throughout.
Can dogs be off lead at Pen y Fan from the Neuadd Reservoir?
For much of the route, yes — the broad open mountain ridge gives plenty of scope for dogs to roam off lead. That said, sheep and occasional wild ponies do graze the slopes, so you'll need to keep a close eye on your dog and be ready to put them back on the lead when livestock are nearby.
What should I know before visiting Pen y Fan from the Neuadd Reservoir with my dog?
This is a big, exposed mountain day covering four summits, so come prepared — the high ridge catches the weather and the descent path can be boggy underfoot. There are no facilities anywhere on the walk, so carry plenty of water for both you and your dog. The free car park at Lower Neuadd Reservoir is small (around 20 spaces) and fills quickly at weekends, so an early start is a good idea. After the walk, dog friendly pubs can be found in nearby Pontsticill and Talybont on Usk.
