Taf Fechan Horseshoe Ridge Walk

Merthyr Tydfil

Dog Friendly Rating:5/10A serious mountain day linking four Brecon Beacons summits with real exposure and technical terrain; scarce water and limited off-lead make this demanding for dogs.

The Taf Fechan Horseshoe is a serious 16km ridge walk linking four major Brecon Beacons summits in a single loop: Corn Du (873m), Pen y Fan (886m, the highest point in South Wales), Cribyn and Fan y Big. Starting from Pontsticill Reservoir, the route climbs steadily to the first summit before traversing the exposed ridge with unobstructed views across the entire Beacons range. The underlying Old Red Sandstone forms dramatic vertical crags, particularly around Corn Du, and the ridge sections are narrow and exposed in places. With 1,172 metres of cumulative ascent, this is one of the most demanding day walks in South Wales and a genuine mountain expedition.

This is a serious mountain dog friendly walk that demands a fit, experienced dog comfortable with sustained climbing, rough ground and genuine exposure. Off-lead potential is limited to the open plateau areas; the technical terrain and narrow ridge paths require leads on the most exposed sections. Water is scarce on the ridge, so carry more than you think you need. The walk is fully exposed to weather changes, and summer storms can develop rapidly on the Beacons, so check forecasts carefully before committing. The lower moorland carries rich peat and heather scent, while the summit ridge has a cold, mineral quality. Pontsticill Reservoir car park provides access. Not suitable for unfit, elderly or nervous dogs. A magnificent mountain day for those with the ability.
