Rogie Falls Circular Walk

Highlands

Dog Friendly Rating: 8/10 A compact woodland walk to a spectacular salmon-leap waterfall on the Black Water, with easy off-lead forest paths and the extraordinary spectacle of fish clearing the falls in late summer.

Rogie Falls sits in a mixed woodland gorge on the Black Water river west of Strathpeffer, and the falls produce a series of powerful cascades and plunge pools that are spectacular at any time of year but particularly dramatic in spate after autumn rain. The salmon leaps between July and October draw visitors specifically to watch the fish throwing themselves up the waterfalls in a display that can be quite astonishing when conditions are right. A suspension footbridge crosses the gorge at the falls, and the circular route through the surrounding forestry covers a comfortable 4 km with modest climbing.

This is a very accessible dog friendly walk that suits dogs of all ages and sizes. The forest paths are wide and well maintained, and off-lead time is available away from the gorge edge. The Black Water below the falls offers swimming access in deep pools. Leads are needed on the suspension bridge and near the falls where the gorge drops away steeply. The woodland environment provides year-round interest, with spring wildflowers, summer salmon and autumn colour all giving the walk a different character by season. The proximity to Strathpeffer, a Victorian spa town with dog-friendly facilities, makes this an easy addition to a longer stay in Easter Ross.
