Silent Valley Mountain Park
Northern Ireland
Silent Valley sits at the heart of the Mourne Mountains in County Down, a dramatic reservoir park enclosed by granite peaks on all sides. The valley narrows steadily as you walk in, with the main reservoir giving way to the upper Ben Crom reservoir beneath towering mountain walls. The valley floor route covers around 5km on well-maintained paths, while the full Ben Crom circuit extends to 14.5km with genuine mountain terrain and 121 metres of climbing on the shorter route, significantly more on the longer circuit. Cold mountain streams cross the path regularly, and the surrounding peaks become more impressive with every kilometre. The Mourne Wall, a remarkable dry-stone boundary running across the summits, is visible on the ridgeline above.
This dog friendly walk offers genuine mountain atmosphere on an accessible route. Off-lead potential is limited as the park requests dogs be kept on leads to protect the water catchment, though the lower moorland sections are more relaxed. The streams running off the hills are fast, cold and irresistible to most dogs, and the moorland carries rich scent of peat and heather. Livestock risk is low within the reservoir park. The valley floor suits dogs of moderate fitness, while the full circuit to Ben Crom demands a fit, experienced mountain dog. An entry fee applies for the park. The car park has basic facilities. Newcastle, a short drive away, has several dog-friendly pubs. A walk that delivers serious mountain scenery without necessarily requiring a full mountain day.

Off-lead opportunities are limited here , the park asks that dogs be kept on leads to protect the water catchment, which is worth respecting. That said, the lower moorland sections are described as more relaxed, so there is a little more freedom as you head further into the valley. It's worth coming prepared with a good lead, particularly for the sections closer to the reservoir.

On-site facilities include a visitor centre, toilets, and a café, making it a comfortable base for the day.
