Stanpit Marsh Nature Reserve

Dorset

Dog Friendly Rating: 7/10 A flat, easy nature reserve walk with estuary views and marshland habitat, ideal for a short, calm outing near Christchurch.

Stanpit Marsh is a 65-hectare nature reserve on the edge of Christchurch Harbour in Dorset, a landscape of saltmarsh, tidal creeks, wet grassland and mudflats where the River Avon meets the sea. This flat 6.4km circuit follows paths across the marsh with vast, open views over the harbour to Hengistbury Head, with just 8 metres of elevation change across the entire walk. The marsh is an important habitat for wading birds and overwintering wildfowl, with lapwings, redshanks and brent geese among the regular visitors. The tidal character means the landscape changes dramatically between high and low water, with the creeks filling and draining twice daily.

Off-lead potential on this dog friendly walk is limited as the marsh is a sensitive nature reserve and dogs should be kept on leads to protect ground-nesting birds and the fragile habitat. The saltmarsh air carries a distinctive estuarine scent of mud, salt and seaweed that most dogs find immediately engaging, and the tidal creeks provide visual interest throughout. The paths can be muddy and waterlogged, particularly after high tides and rain. Christchurch town centre is a short walk with numerous dog-friendly pubs and cafés. Parking is available at Stanpit Recreation Ground. A walk best appreciated for its birdlife and wide-open horizons, particularly atmospheric on still winter mornings when the harbour is glassy and the waders are feeding.
