A ruined Norman keep and a rare 12th century riverside house, free and central, best walked with your dog as part of a longer Christchurch loop.

Two fragments, one of them genuinely rare. The mound top keep was part of a large Norman castle that once dominated Christchurch. Beside it stands the more interesting building: the 12th century riverside chamber block known as the Norman House, one of very few surviving examples of domestic Norman architecture in England, probably built in the 1180s and retaining a rare Norman chimney.

As you take in the chimney and the chamber block, your dog gets the town rather than the site, and that is the right way to plan it. It sits in the middle of Christchurch beside the river, with the mill stream, the priory and the quay all within a few minutes, and the walk out to Christchurch Quay and the harbour is a good one.

Free and open at any reasonable hour. No dog rules are published for the site, so keep your dog on a lead around the ruins, which sit right by water and a public path. There are no facilities on site but the town has plenty. English Heritage run occasional yoga and meditation sessions here, charged and bookable.
