Tintern Abbey and the Wye Valley Walk

Monmouthshire

Dog Friendly Rating: 8/10 A classic dog friendly Wye Valley loop from Tintern Abbey up through ancient woodland to the Devils Pulpit viewpoint, returning along the river.

Tintern Abbey is one of the most photographed ruins in Britain, an evocative Cistercian shell on a wooded bend of the River Wye, and this dog friendly walk is the classic way to see it. The route starts at the Old Station, climbs steeply through Black Cliff and Caswell Wood up onto Offa's Dyke and the Devils Pulpit viewpoint, and drops back to follow the Wye Valley Walk along the river.

This is a satisfying half day walk on woodland paths, forestry tracks and a riverside greenway. Dogs can be off lead through the woods where there is no livestock, but please keep them on a lead at the viewpoints (steep drops) and through the village. Tintern is famously dog friendly with several pubs welcoming dogs and water bowls outside many shops, and dogs on short leads are welcome to the ground floor of the abbey itself. Parking is at the Old Station car park, pay and display.
