Eynsford Castle

A rare early Norman enclosure castle with curtain walls at full height, giving your dog a contained grassy space in a good corner of Kent for walking.
Eynsford is unusual among Norman castles because it never had a keep or a motte. Instead it was defended by an extensive curtain wall enclosing the whole site, making it a rare surviving example of an early Norman enclosure castle. Parts of that wall still stand to full height, alongside the remains of the hall where the household lived. Its story ends badly: a disputed inheritance culminated in deliberate vandalism in 1312, after which it was abandoned.
While you walk the wall circuit and the hall foundations, your dog gets a walled, grassed, contained space with nothing to climb, which makes it easy going. It also sits in a very good part of Kent: the Darent Valley Path runs through Eynsford, the ford and the old bridge are a minute away, and Lullingstone is close by.
Free and open. This site is unstaffed and carries no published dog rules, so keep your dog on a lead around the walls and under close control on the grass. There are no facilities on site, but the village has a pub and a café and there is parking nearby.
