Richard III's northern power base in Wensleydale, and one of the sites where your dog is welcome throughout the castle, not just the grounds.
This was Richard III's home, and it feels like a power base rather than a ruin. At its core is an immense Norman keep, one of the largest in England, and around it the Neville family added three ranges of luxurious chambers, which earned Middleham the nickname the Windsor of the North in the 15th century.
Whilst you work through the multi-storey toilet tower, the horse powered mill and the keep's lofty viewing platform looking out over Wensleydale, your dog comes with you, because dogs on leads are welcome to the castle, meaning the whole site rather than just the grounds.
Middleham is a racehorse training town, so expect strings of horses on the roads and gallops on the moor above, which is worth knowing if your dog is reactive. The Dales walking from here is excellent, and Jervaulx Abbey and the Ure are close by. Parking is limited free on-street space nearby, so arrive early on a summer weekend. There is a shop, toilets, exhibition, gardens and picnic seating.
