A complete early Tudor abbots' mansion on the Somerset Levels, with level grounds for your dog and Britain's only thatched monks' lavatory.

Most abbeys give you the church. Muchelney gives you the abbot's house, intact. The two storey abbots' lodgings survive as a complete early Tudor mansion in miniature, beautifully fitted: a magnificent chamber with an ornate fireplace, a famous carved settle seat, stained glass, and two rooms with wall paintings imitating expensive hangings.

As you work through the lodgings and find the thatched two storey monks' lavatory in the grounds, which is unique in Britain and exactly as odd as it sounds, your dog gets the Somerset Levels: flat, green, watery and quiet, with the abbey grounds giving level grass and mature trees.

Dogs are allowed on leads. There is free parking for about 40 cars on site. There is a shop, toilets, exhibition, gardens and picnic seating but no café. The village also has the Priest's House, a National Trust property, and Muchelney church next door has a remarkable painted ceiling of angels, so it makes a good combined stop.
