Netley is the most complete surviving Cistercian abbey in southern England, with almost all the walls of its 13th century church still standing along with many monastic buildings, so you walk through a real church rather than an outline. Jane Austen visited, Horace Walpole raved about it, and the ivy clad ruins fed directly into the Romantic and Gothic imagination.
As you walk the church and pick out the traces of the Tudor house it briefly became, your dog gets an unusually good local walk: enclosed wooded grounds, level mown grass inside the church, deep shade, and Royal Victoria Country Park with its shoreline on Southampton Water a short distance away.
