Piel Castle

Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria

A 14th century castle on a tiny island reached by small ferry, with beaches, seals and a pub next door. Check the boat takes your dog first.

An island castle with a pub, which is a hard combination to beat. Piel Castle was built by the Abbot of Furness to guard Barrow against pirates and Scots raiders, and it is substantial: a massive keep, inner and outer baileys and towered curtain walls, all still standing. Lambert Simnel landed his invasion force here in 1487. The island also has the Ship Inn, whose landlord holds the ceremonial title of King of Piel.

Whilst you work through the keep and the baileys, your dog gets a small island with beaches, shingle and sea on every side, plus grey seals and enormous bird numbers on the surrounding sands.

Free and open any reasonable daylight hours, but access is by a small boat ferry English Heritage do not manage, so check sailings, tides and weather before committing, and confirm the ferry takes dogs. Nothing official is published about dogs at the castle. The island is exposed with unfenced ruins and shoreline, so keep your dog on a lead, and note there is no shelter if the weather turns.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Piel Castle dog friendly?

Nothing official has been published about dogs at Piel Castle itself, so it sits in something of a grey area. What we do know is that the island is open and exposed, with beaches and shoreline on every side, so it's well suited to dogs in spirit — just keep yours on a lead given the unfenced ruins and open water.

  • Are dogs allowed at Piel Castle year round?

The castle is free to enter and open any reasonable daylight hours, so there are no seasonal restrictions on visiting. That said, access depends entirely on the small privately run boat ferry, which is not managed by English Heritage, so sailings will vary with tides, weather and operator schedules throughout the year.

  • What should I know before visiting Piel Castle with my dog?

The most important step is to contact the ferry operator before you go, as it's a small privately run boat and you'll need to confirm it takes dogs before committing to the trip. Once on the island, keep your dog on a lead — the ruins are unfenced, the shoreline is open, and the island is exposed with no shelter if the weather turns. On the plus side, your dog will have beaches, shingle, grey seals and huge numbers of birds to enjoy, with a pub next door to reward you both afterwards.
