St Catherine's Oratory

A 14th century octagonal tower on the highest down on the Isle of Wight, built as penance for looting a shipwreck. A stiff climb with your dog to earn it.
Built by a guilty man, and the story is excellent. In 1328 a local landowner plundered church property from a ship wrecked nearby, specifically casks of white wine intended for a monastery, and was ordered to build and endow an oratory as penance. This tall octagonal tower is all that survives. Affectionately known as the Pepperpot, it seems to have doubled as a lighthouse, making it one of the oldest surviving lighthouse structures in Britain.
Whilst you take in the tower, your dog gets the main event: it stands on St Catherine's Down, the highest ground on the Isle of Wight, and the walk up is open downland with big views over the Channel and along the back of the Wight, plus a stiff climb to earn it.
Free and permanently open. There is a car park opposite the access path, and the climb from there is short but steep. No dog guidance is posted. The down is grazed, exposed and close to cliff edges in places, so keep your dog on a lead. There are no facilities.
