Stott Park Bobbin Mill

A fully working Victorian bobbin mill near Windermere, with coppiced woodland grounds for your dog, though they cannot join the guided tour inside.

This is a working Industrial Revolution factory, not a display about one. Stott Park is the last survivor of the hundred or so Lake District mills that produced wooden bobbins for the Lancashire cotton industry, and it is presented exactly as it was in the 1870s, packed with belt driven machinery that is still run for visitors. Bobbin boys aged from ten to fourteen worked here in genuinely arduous conditions to turn out 250,000 bobbins a week, and the guided tour does not soften that.

While you take the tour, plan for your dog, because dogs are not permitted on the guided tour inside the mill, which is the main event.
