Uffington Castle - White Horse and Dragon Hill

An Iron Age hillfort, the oldest chalk hill figure in Britain and a legendary dragon mound, giving you and your dog one of the finest free downland walks in the south.
Three outstanding sites within a few hundred metres of each other, all free and all open. Uffington Castle occupies the summit of Whitehorse Hill and is a rare and outstanding example of a large Iron Age hillfort. Just below is the White Horse itself, the oldest chalk cut hill figure in Britain at perhaps more than 3,000 years old, scoured and maintained by local people for a hundred generations. Beside it is Dragon Hill, a natural flat topped mound where St George is said to have killed the dragon.
Whilst you work between the three, your dog gets one of the finest free walks in southern England: open chalk downland, huge views over the Vale of White Horse, and the Ridgeway running along the top, connecting to Wayland's Smithy a mile away.
There is a charged National Trust car park at White Horse Hill, free to English Heritage members. Nothing official is published about dogs at this site, as this is open downland. It is grazed by sheep, holds ground nesting birds and has steep slopes, so keep your dog on a lead.
