The house is not the reason to come. Wrest Park is a 19th century mansion in the style of a French chateau, but its ninety acres of gardens are the real glory, telling the story of 300 years of English garden design in one place: formal Baroque canals and the Long Water, a Capability Brown river, Victorian parterres and a woodland garden threaded with statuary, temples and a Bath House.
As you walk through that many changes of fashion in a single afternoon, your dog gets one of the best English Heritage sites going, because it is almost entirely outdoors and there is a lot of ground to cover. Dogs are allowed on leads in the grounds, with assistance dogs welcome, and there is a water bowl at the Visitor Centre.
There is plenty of parking with designated disabled spaces in the Walled Garden area. Café, shop, toilets, exhibition and picnic seating are on site. At £17 an adult it is not cheap, but ninety acres is a genuine day out for you and your dog rather than an hour, so it earns it better than most.
