Black Rock Sands

Gwynedd

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A vast, famous Cardigan Bay beach where vehicles can drive onto the sand, with Snowdonia as a backdrop, a seasonal restriction from 1 April to 30 September and excellent off-lead space outside the season.

Black Rock Sands (Morfa Bychan) is a famous wide, flat sandy beach near Porthmadog, unique in Wales for allowing vehicles to drive onto the sand. The beach is extremely popular, vast and backed by the Snowdonia mountains, creating one of the most dramatic beach settings in North Wales. The sand extends for miles and the beach can accommodate very large numbers without feeling crowded.

A seasonal restriction applies at Black Rock Sands from 1 April to 30 September under Gwynedd Council PSPO, covering designated zones. Given the vast scale of the beach, dog-accessible sections remain significant. Outside the restriction season, the full beach is open and this is one of the finest off-lead environments in Wales.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Black Rock Sands dog friendly?

Black Rock Sands is a great destination for dogs, earning a 7/10 dog-friendly rating. The beach is vast and flat, which means there's genuine space to roam, and outside the seasonal restriction period it's one of the finest off-lead environments in Wales. Bear in mind that a PSPO restriction applies to designated zones between 1 April and 30 September, so planning around the season makes a real difference to your visit.

  • Are dogs allowed at Black Rock Sands year round?

Dogs are welcome at Black Rock Sands throughout the year, but a seasonal restriction under Gwynedd Council's PSPO applies to designated zones from 1 April to 30 September. Given the sheer scale of the beach, dog-accessible sections remain significant even during this period. From 1 October through to the end of March, the full beach is open to dogs, making it a particularly rewarding off-season destination.

  • What should I know before visiting Black Rock Sands with my dog?

Black Rock Sands is unusually large and flat, so dogs have plenty of space to stretch their legs — but do be aware that vehicles are permitted to drive onto the sand, which is unique in Wales and worth keeping in mind for your dog's safety. The seasonal PSPO restriction (1 April to 30 September) covers designated zones, so it's worth checking the current boundaries before you arrive. There's a beach cafe and facilities on site, and nearby Porthmadog offers a full range of amenities if you need anything else for your trip.
