Harlech Beach

Gwynedd

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A vast sandy beach below UNESCO World Heritage Harlech Castle with the Snowdonia mountains as a backdrop, a seasonal restriction from 1 April to 30 September and one of Wales's finest off-lead walks outside season.

Harlech Beach is a long, wide sandy beach below the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Harlech Castle, one of the most impressive medieval fortresses in Europe. The castle sits on a spectacular rocky crag above the town, and from the beach the silhouette of the castle against the Snowdonia mountains is extraordinary. The beach extends south toward Barmouth in a long unbroken arc of sand backed by dunes and the Morfa Harlech National Nature Reserve.

A seasonal restriction applies from 1 April to 30 September under Gwynedd Council PSPO, covering designated zones on the main beach. Outside the restricted season, this is one of the finest dog walks in Wales: vast sands, castle views and mountain backdrops with almost no visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Harlech Beach dog friendly?

Harlech Beach earns a strong 8/10 for dog friendliness, and it's easy to see why — vast, wide sands stretch south in an unbroken arc toward Barmouth, backed by dunes and the Morfa Harlech National Nature Reserve. Outside the summer season, it's considered one of the finest dog walks in Wales, with spectacular views of Harlech Castle and the Snowdonia mountains as your backdrop.

  • Are dogs allowed at Harlech Beach year round?

Dogs are welcome at Harlech Beach year round, but a seasonal restriction applies from 1 April to 30 September under a Gwynedd Council PSPO, covering designated zones on the main beach. Outside those months, the beach is essentially yours — huge open sands with very few other visitors, making it a genuinely special off-lead destination.

  • What should I know before visiting Harlech Beach with my dog?

It's worth checking the exact extent of the seasonal restricted zones before visiting between April and September, as these are set by Gwynedd Council PSPO. The beach car park is accessed off the coast road and it's a short walk to the sand from there — note there are no facilities on the beach itself, but Harlech town has cafes and pubs if you need a post-walk stop.
