Pentewan Beach

Cornwall

Dog Friendly Rating:6/10A long sandy bay near St Austell with seasonal dog restrictions in summer but generous space and good water access in quieter months.

Pentewan Beach is a long, broad stretch of sand and fine shingle on the south Cornish coast between St Austell and Mevagissey, backed by the Pentewan Valley and fronting a large holiday park. The beach has a wide, open aspect with views across St Austell Bay, and the combination of flat, firm sand near the waterline and the shallow bay makes for easy beach walking at most tide states. The village of Pentewan sits immediately behind, with the river estuary adding a different wetland character to the western end of the beach.

Dogs face some seasonal restrictions at Pentewan Beach under the Cornwall Council PSPO, with bans applying during the summer period on the main beach sections closest to the holiday park. However, outside these restrictions and during winter months this is a generous, well-spaced dog friendly beach. The broad sandy expanse gives dogs serious room to run, and the shallow water is ideal for paddling and swimming. The river estuary at the western end provides additional interest and calmer water for less confident swimmers. The beach is busiest during the school holidays and quietest between October and April when the whole beach is open and visitor numbers are low.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Pentewan Beach dog friendly?

Pentewan Beach is a decent option for dog owners, though it comes with some caveats that are worth knowing before you visit. It scores 6/10 on our dog-friendly rating, reflecting the fact that seasonal restrictions apply to parts of the beach in summer. Outside of those restrictions, it's a generous, open stretch of sand with plenty of room for dogs to run and good access to shallow water for paddling and swimming.

  • Are dogs allowed at Pentewan Beach year round?

Dogs are welcome year round, but the rules vary by season. Under the Cornwall Council PSPO, dog bans apply during the summer period on the main beach sections closest to Pentewan Sands Holiday Park. In winter months and outside restriction periods, the whole beach is open to dogs, and with visitor numbers at their lowest between October and April, this is arguably when it's at its best for a dog walk.

  • What should I know before visiting Pentewan Beach with my dog?

Check the current seasonal restrictions before you go, as parts of the beach near the holiday park are off-limits to dogs during summer. The beach itself is broad and flat with firm sand near the waterline, making for easy walking at most tide states, and the shallow bay is well-suited to dogs who like a swim. The western end of the beach meets the river estuary, which adds a bit of variety and offers calmer water for less confident swimmers. Parking is available at the Pentewan Sands Holiday Park car park (PL26 6AY, charges apply), with additional roadside parking in the village.
