Polkerris Beach

Cornwall

Dog Friendly Rating:6/10A beautifully sheltered harbour beach on the south coast with excellent facilities, but a long seasonal restriction means it works best as an off-season destination.

Polkerris is a small, south-facing harbour beach near Fowey on Cornwall's sheltered south coast, protected by a historic stone pier that calms the water and gives the bay an almost Mediterranean quality on sunny days. The village clusters directly behind the beach with a pub, cafe, and bistro right at the waterfront, and the surrounding South West Coast Path connects north toward Par and south along the dramatic coastline toward Gribbin Head. The fine sand, sheltered aspect, and gentle harbour atmosphere make this one of the prettiest cove beaches in South Cornwall.\n\nThis dog friendly beach has a broad seasonal restriction — dogs are not permitted from Easter Day to 30 September, making it firmly an autumn-through-winter destination for dog walkers. From October onwards, the beach transforms into a quiet, scenic spot where dogs can explore the tideline freely and paddle in the calm harbour shallows. The sheltered setting means warmer, softer air than the exposed north coast, carrying the scent of brine and boat varnish from the small vessels moored inside the harbour wall. Currents beyond the pier can be stronger than the calm bay suggests, so keep water-loving dogs close.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Polkerris Beach dog friendly?

Polkerris Beach is dog friendly, though with some seasonal limitations that are worth knowing before you plan your visit , it earns a 6/10 on our dog friendly rating. When dogs are permitted, the sheltered harbour setting makes it a genuinely lovely spot, with calm water for a paddle and a quiet cove atmosphere that's hard to beat on the south Cornish coast.

  • Are dogs allowed at Polkerris Beach year round?

Unfortunately not , dogs are banned from the beach from Easter Day through to 30 September each year, which is quite a lengthy restriction. That makes Polkerris firmly an off-season destination for dog walkers, but from October through to Easter it becomes a peaceful and scenic spot where dogs can roam the tideline freely.

  • What should I know before visiting Polkerris Beach with my dog?

The most important thing to plan around is the seasonal restriction , dogs aren't allowed on the beach between Easter and 30 September, so visit in the autumn or winter months. Once you're there, the harbour is calm and sheltered, but be aware that currents beyond the pier can be stronger than the bay suggests, so keep swimming dogs close. On the practical side, there's a pay-and-display car park about 3 minutes' walk from the beach, plus a pub, café, and bistro right at the waterfront if you fancy stopping for a bite.
