Salthouse Beach

Norfolk

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A wild, remote shingle beach within the North Norfolk AONB with year-round dog access and outstanding birdwatching on the adjacent Salthouse and Cley Marshes nature reserve.

Salthouse Beach is a quiet, remote shingle beach on the North Norfolk Heritage Coast between Cley-next-the-Sea and Weybourne, backed by the famous Salthouse Marshes and the Cley and Salthouse Marshes nature reserve managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. The beach sits on the seaward side of the shingle bank that protects the marshes, and the landscape is one of the most celebrated on the North Norfolk coast for birdwatching: the marshes hold bitterns, marsh harriers, avocets and a wide variety of waders and wildfowl throughout the year. The beach itself is wild, undeveloped and rarely crowded, with the only sounds typically being the crunch of shingle underfoot and the call of seabirds.

This is a dog friendly beach year-round with no seasonal restrictions on the beach itself. However, the adjacent Norfolk Wildlife Trust reserve at Cley and Salthouse Marshes requires dogs to be kept on leads on all reserve paths to protect ground-nesting and feeding birds. The shingle beach terrain is harder going than a sandy beach but the space and freedom make it a worthwhile destination for dogs who enjoy a wilder environment. There is informal parking on the roadside along the coast road (A149). No formal beach facilities are available on site.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Salthouse Beach dog friendly?

Yes, Salthouse Beach is a dog-friendly destination and earns a solid 7/10 on our rating. It's a wild, undeveloped shingle beach with plenty of space and freedom, which suits dogs who enjoy a more adventurous, off-the-beaten-track environment. Just be aware that if you venture onto the adjacent Cley and Salthouse Marshes nature reserve paths, dogs must be kept on leads to protect the wildlife there.

  • Are dogs allowed at Salthouse Beach year round?

Yes, there are no seasonal restrictions on dogs at Salthouse Beach itself, so you're welcome to visit with your dog at any time of year. This makes it a great option for a winter coastal walk when many other beaches along the Norfolk coast have off-season rules in place.

  • What should I know before visiting Salthouse Beach with my dog?

The beach is shingle rather than sand, which is harder going underfoot for both dogs and owners, but the wild, uncrowded atmosphere makes it worth it. There are no facilities on site, so come prepared with water and anything else you need — the nearest options are in Cley-next-the-Sea, which has a shop, deli, and a tearoom at the Cley Windmill. Parking is informal roadside parking along the A149 coast road, and if you plan to walk on the Norfolk Wildlife Trust reserve paths at Cley and Salthouse Marshes, keep your dog on a lead throughout to protect the ground-nesting and feeding birds.
