Cley Marshes RSPB Coastal Walk
Norfolk
Cley Marshes is a Norfolk Wildlife Trust flagship: reedbeds, lagoons and shingle bank pressed between huge skies and the North Sea. The walk itself is dog friendly, though note that the reserve trails and visitor centre are closed to dogs (assistance dogs only), so this circuit sticks to the coast path, the East Bank and Cley beach.
From the visitor centre car park, the route runs along the A149 verge or quiet lanes to the East Bank, out to the shingle ridge, and back along the beach or coast path for a circuit of around 5 km. Dogs must be on lead on the East Bank and around the reserve margins, and a seasonal restriction zone covers the beach west of the car park from 1 April to 15 August to protect ground nesting birds; outside those areas and dates, close-control off lead is allowed on the beach. Terrain is flat throughout but the shingle stretch is hard going on tired paws. Parking is plentiful at the NWT visitor centre (free for members, otherwise around 3 to 5 pounds), with cafe, toilets and a shop on site.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Cley Marshes RSPB Coastal Walk dog friendly?
Cley Marshes gets a 6/10 for dog friendliness — it's a genuinely enjoyable outing for dogs, but with some important caveats. The reserve trails and visitor centre are closed to dogs (assistance dogs only), so the route sticks to the coast path, the East Bank and Cley beach, making a circuit of around 5 km. It's a flat walk with big skies and open coastal scenery, so well worth the trip if you go in knowing what to expect.
Can dogs be off lead at Cley Marshes RSPB Coastal Walk?
Dogs must be kept on lead on the East Bank and around the reserve margins throughout the year. On the beach, there's a seasonal restriction west of the car park from 1 April to 15 August to protect ground-nesting birds; outside that zone and those dates, close-control off lead is permitted on the beach. So there is freedom to be had, but it depends on where you are and the time of year.
What should I know before visiting Cley Marshes RSPB Coastal Walk with my dog?
The main thing to be aware of is that the Norfolk Wildlife Trust reserve trails and visitor centre are off limits to dogs, so you'll be walking the coast path, East Bank and beach rather than the reserve itself. The shingle stretch can be tough on paws, so it's worth bearing that in mind if your dog tires easily. Parking is at the NWT visitor centre on the A149 (free for members, otherwise around £3–£5), and there's a cafe, toilets and shop on site — though dogs aren't permitted inside.
